![]() ![]() When the first Spanish explorers came to the Americas, they brought cattle and cattle-raising expertise with them. Ranching was only firmly established in the New World of the Americas. These early ranchers used methods still associated with ranching today, such as using horses for herding, round-ups, cattle drives, and branding. ![]() The practice of raising large herds of livestock on extensive grazing lands started in Spain and Portugal around 1000 CE. History of Ranching People raised livestock throughout the Middle Ages, but usually only in small numbers on small areas of land. Resort ranches provide a more relaxing experience, with fun activities like trail rides and sing-alongs. Still others allow visitors to hunt native or imported animals. Others focus on horseback riding, offering lessons and trail rides. Some of these sites are working ranches that allow guests to help out in real ranching activities. Some ranches, nicknamed dude ranches, offer tourist facilities. They also supply materials, such as leather and wool, for clothing, furniture, and other industries. Livestock provide meat for human and animal consumption. Livestock raised on ranches are an important part of a regions agriculture. The microchip uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) to not only identify the animals owner, but also to relay information about its location and health. A microchip is implanted under the skin of the animal. Many ranchers use microchips instead of brands. Ear-tags and ink tattoos are more common. Hot brands are less frequently used on modern ranches. The scar left by the burn is the animals brand. Each animal belonging to that ranch has the design burned into its skin. A rancher or cowboy heats an iron instrument with a design unique to his ranch. The traditional brand is known as a hot brand. Branding is the process of permanently marking an animal to indicate ownership. From there, cattle are loaded into vehicles and shipped to slaughterhouses. Cattle drives start on ranches and usually end near points of major transportation routes, such as a harbor or railroad station. In the 1700s and 1800s, cowboys on horseback took a year or more to drive cattle thousands of kilometers. A cattle drive is a massive effort of moving a herd of cattle from one place to another. Round-ups also involve a large number of ranch personnel performing different tasks at the same time: veterinarians administering care to the animals, cowboys herding the animals, and wranglers caring for the ranchs horses. Even the most docile cattle or sheep are likely to become aggressive during a round-up. Animals often do not want to be rounded up and herded into a small, confined area. A round-up is one of the most difficult responsibilities of ranchers and cowboys. It can be done for a wide variety of reasons: health care (such as immunization shots) for the animals, branding, or the shearing of sheep. A round-up is usually conducted by cowboys on horseback, ATV, or other vehicle. A round-up, called a muster in Australia, is a gathering of all livestock on a ranch. Grazing is so important to Australian stations, ranchers are known as graziers. Herding also involves keeping the herd safe from predators and natural dangers of the landscape. Ranchers and cowboys often herd animals toward favorable grazing areas. Herding is the practice of caring for roaming groups of livestock over a large area. Herding, round-ups, cattle drives, and branding often symbolize ranching and cowboy culture. In Australia and New Zealand, they are called jackaroos. In Mexico and South America, cowboys are known as vaqueros. Cowboy culture is an important part of the identity of ranching regions. Cowboys often work with horses to herd cattle and sheep. Cowboys are responsible for herding and maintaining the health of animals across these vast ranches. The largest, Anna Creek station, covers almost 24,000 square kilometers (9,266 square miles). Some Australian ranches, known as stations, extend more than 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles). ![]() In these regions, grazing animals are able to roam over large areas. Ranching is common in temperate, dry areas, such as the Pampas region of South America, the western United States, the Prairie Provinces of Canada, and the Australian Outback. The ranching and livestock industry is growing faster than any other agricultural sector in the world. Some ranchers also raise elk, bison, ostriches, emus, and alpacas. Ranchers commonly raise grazing animals such as cattle and sheep. Ranching is the practice of raising herds of animals on large tracts of land. ![]() ![]() ![]() There is a glass dispenser on every table. Just a quick note, we of course serve pancake syrup. Another note - the menu listed on tripadvisor for this restaurant is not correct - I tried to order an Obx special and my husband tried another item on the menu here, and they did not offer them at Kill Devil Hills location. I'm pretty sure most people are reviewing the location in Kitty Hawk with the cream colored horse out front - that's just my conclusion. We chose this place from so many others - based on great reviews- because, as he said, its a cut-throat industry. This left me focused on the success of his business, and how he could've handled it better, not my food. You understand what I'm saying right?" All I could do was agree and nod - clearly he is not a customer focused owner/manager. "Its a 'cut-throat' industry, and I need to watch every penny, and if I start giving things away for free, it will hurt my bottom line and I can't stay competitive. He cut me off then - he told me I need to consider his point of view. He then said "What's that look for?", so, with that, I let him know that i thought it was strange that they made a mistake (it was busy, so i can understand) but, I thought for a $1.50 (extra for 2 tbs of choc/pb chips) it was strange that they couldnt j'ust make them and bring them out - it wasn't my mistake. We both said good, but looked at each other, wondering if we should explain the mix-up. When my correct pancakes showed up, as we ate, the owner came over and asked how our food was. Also they did not provide pancake syrup? It's a pancake house. The waitress came back, and asked if I'd pay the difference, which I agreed to do (i checked the receipt - they had indeed not put my order in correctly - as I said, the cashier recommended it, soooo, not sure how that happened). This is the part where things went south. When our food arrived, they missed the choc/pb chips in my pancakes and I let them know. I ordered pancakes with choc/pb chips, as recommended by the cashier. The servers and cashier were very nice and service was quick. I liked the selection of food here, and the fresh fruit. The service was pretty quick, and the food was sub-par. The restaurant serves food cafeteria style: you grab a tray, stand in line, review the menu on the wall, choose sides and drinks as you like, place your order/pay, find a table and wait for your food to be served. ![]() ![]() ![]() 128Bit-Yuzu Installer is 100% transparent and open-source. Team Cherry has been awfully quiet on Silksong's development, but hopefully these years of hard work and focus are leading to major reveals about the game - ones which are hopefully coming sooner rather than later. The series has become somewhat of a face for indie games in that time, which is all the more impressive considering it was developed by only three people. It is hard to believe that Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced over three years ago, and that the original is five years old. Team Cherry's official website does explicitly state to keep the fact that they are only three people in mind, so it is easy to see how work on the seemingly massive Silksong can spread the team thin and direct focus solely into the game's development. Rumors and fake leaks have been spread, but as of now, none have come to fruition. The game did have a great playable demo at the E3 gaming convention in 2019, to give at least some players a taste of the game, but there really has not been much news since.Īs a result, die-hard fans of the game have analyzed any potential date that information could have been revealed, including the series' recent 5th anniversary. Well, Hollow Knight: Silksong was revealed over three years ago, and the game is still a mystery. Any follow up to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight clearly has some big shoes to fill, but this initial trailer for Silksong assures fans that the game will do just that. The gameplay also is much faster and acrobatic now, all fitting of Hollow Knight: Silksong's protagonist Hornet. This trailer boasts many new enemies, bosses, varied locations with vibrant visuals, new towns - it is clear that the world of Silksong is much larger in scope than the original game. Hollow Knight: Silksong was first revealed on Valentine's Day of 2019, with a surprise announcement trailer. One final DLC was planned, in which players can replay the game as the fan favorite character, Hornet, but this idea fully transitioned into Hollow Knight: Silksong. These include new areas to explore, filled with platforming challenges, on top of some of the hardest boss fights and gauntlets in the game. Due to the success of the base game, Hollow Knight has multiple free DLC expansions. The combat is also difficult, which, in conjunction with losing all obtained currency upon death, frequently draws comparisons to games like Dark Souls.Īll of these factors resulted in Hollow Knight being a smash hit - it is hard to believe that its developer, Team Cherry, consists of only three people. On top of this, Hollow Knight has a deep combat system in which players can use melee and magic, and even customize their loadouts by equipping certain charms. Its world is dense and filled with secrets to uncover, and the game's excellent platforming tools make backtracking fun, as opposed to a chore. Hollow Knight is a metroidvania set in a dark, gloomy underground, with an adorable art style. ![]() ![]() ![]() Many reef fishes targeted by anglers - like red snapper - are found at depths greater than 50 feet. Watch a red grouper with barotrauma recompress as a SeaQualizer descender device returns the fish to its original depth. “What we’re really trying to do is reduce the number of potential dead fish through education,” Oliver says. The cumulative effects from catch and release can greatly impact overall populations. The process of capturing and handling fish can result in injuries or death which presents a major conservation issue for some fisheries. While releasing fish can help conserve their populations, there is more to it than simply tossing them back in the water. “With more people moving to the coast and fishing the coastal waters, more fish are being caught and released,” says Oliver, a communication fellow with the South Atlantic Sea Grants and SAFMC. Oliver and Withers both work for the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) and are traveling along the Carolina, Georgia, and Florida coasts to talk with anglers about best catch and release fishing practices. When the fish are brought aboard, Oliver and Withers quickly dehook, measure, and release them with the aid of a descending device, a newly required piece of fishing gear in the South Atlantic - and the catalyst for their trip.
